For those of you who like to plan ahead, the dates for our next ICAF festival have now been confirmed. Starting on Wednesday 30 March, the doors of Zuidplein Theatre will once again open to host the fifth International Community Arts Festival. The entire building - and adjacent spaces in the neighbourhood - will be filled with some of the most exciting examples of community art from around the world, in all disciplines. The theme of the fifth festival will be: The Power of Community Art. The power of the artistic communication. The power of the social effect, on participants, on audiences, at a micro or a macro level. We believe that community art is an incredibly powerful phenomenon that generates amazing, innovative, original art for new audiences in unexpected places. In addition to a unique aesthetic experience, the best community art also offers much much more. What and how differs from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, from country to country, from context to context. ICAF provides you with the opportunity to sample practices from around the globe, interact with artists and participants who operate in totally different circumstances than your own, but who share a common passion and a fundamental belief that powerful, relevant art is right that belongs to everyone.

On Friday 3 April, the Zuidplein Theatre will be the venue for a mini-edition of the ICAF festival. Central theme will again be ‘quality’. In six workshops, different sectors will contemplate on how they perceive quality in community arts: arts councils, politicians, arts education, art theory, new audiences, and art criticism.

During this event, the book and DVD about the previous fourth edition of the Festival will be officially launched by presenting the first copy to Petra Kuppers, a community choreographer and researcher who is based at the University of Michigan in the US. She will hold a presentation on what she perceives as the qualities of community art.

After the morning workshops, a plenary debate will be held, followed by a matinee performance by Petra Kuppers and her partner, Neil Marcus. In the evening, RWT’s latest youth production ‘Down Town’ will be performed in the main auditorium. The day will end with a special edition of the late night open stage.

Van 26 tot en met 30 maart 2008 vindt het 4e International Community Arts Festival plaats in en om het Theater Zuidplein te Rotterdam. Het festival zal naast theater ook andere kunstdisciplines bevatten als dans, muziek, nieuwe media, en beeldende kunst.

Iedere dag beginnen we met een talkshow in de ochtend, waarin spelers en makers aan het woord komen. Na de lunch heeft u een keuze uit zes workshops tussen 13.00u en 14.30u, waarna er tussen 15.00u en 17.00u een menu van voorstellingen en presentaties wordt aangeboden. Na het avondeten is er iedere avond om 19.30u een vroege voorstelling in de kleine zaal van het Zuidplein en een late voorstelling in de grote zaal om 21u. Iedere dag sluiten we spetterend af met live muziek in het café: het zogenaamde late night podium.

From 26 through 30 March 2008 the fourth edition of the International Community Arts Festival will take place in and around the Zuidplein Theatre in Rotterdam. In addition to theatre, the expanded festival will now also include other art disciplines like dance, music, visual arts and new media.

Each day we begin with a talk show featuring actors and makers. After lunch, we offer a first round of workshops between 1 and 2.30 PM and a first round of showcases and presentations between 3 and 5 PM. After dinner, an early evening performance will commence at 7.30 PM in the small auditorium of Zuidplein Theatre. It will be followed by another performance in the main auditorium at 9 PM. The evening will conclude with live music in a festive event in the theatre café we call ‘late night open stage’.

Door Het Waterhuis (NL)

Het Waterhuis is het professionele jeugdtheatergezelschap van Rotterdam. Sinds 1995 maakt Het Waterhuis theater voor kinderen en jongeren. Onder artistieke leiding van Roel Twijnstra en met jonge, professionele acteurs uit verschillende windstreken brengt Het Waterhuis voorstellingen die soms ontroerend en confronterend zijn, maar vaak ook spannend en grappig. Talent, techniek, video, muziek en dans worden ingezet voor vernieuwende theaterproducties.

Rotterdam is zowel thuishaven als vertrekpunt. De dynamiek van de stad inspireert Het Waterhuis niet alleen om de diepte in te duiken naar actuele thema’s in Nederland, maar ook om uit te varen naar andere delen van de wereld. Met name naar Zuid-Afrika waar een nieuwe versie van de voorstelling Kruik werd gemaakt.
Kruik is een klucht vol misverstanden door theatermakers met verschillende culturele achtergronden. Het is een remake van de voorstelling De Kruik die het Waterhuis maakte in 1999. De voorstelling is gebaseerd op een eenakter van Pirandello van de gebroeders Taviani (ook wel bekend uit de film Kaos). Kruik werd in mei 2007 opnieuw gemaakt in Zuid-Afrika en werd daar gespeeld in Elim, Capetown en op het National Arts festival Grahamstown.
Achter op een oud vrachtwagentje staat een enorme kruik. Er zit een medicijn in tegen alle ziektes en rampen van deze tijd. Dat zegt althans de man die de kruik komt brengen. Hij hoopt ermee alle jongeren op het goede pad te houden, ook al heeft hij zelf wel een criminele achtergrond. Maar dan breekt de kruik. Met hulp van de schoonmaakster probeert de man hem weer te lijmen. Maar is zij wel een schoonmaakster…

Na het spelen van de voorstelling zal artistiek leider Roel Twijnstra met behulp van documentair beeldmateriaal in gaan op de specifieke betekenis en omstandigheden waaronder Kruik in Zuid Afrika werd gespeeld.

Waterhouse is the professional youth theatre company of Rotterdam. It has been making theatre for children and youth since 1995. Directed by Roel Twijnstra and with a cast of young professional actors from all over the world, the company presents performances that confront, move, amuse and excite. Productions draw on talent, technology, video, music and dance to create innovative theatre.

Rotterdam is home base and point of departure. The dynamics of the city inspire Waterhouse to explore current Dutch issues, but it also travels to other parts of the world, especially to South Africa where a new version of ‘The Jug’ was created. ‘The Jug’ is a farce full of misunderstandings. It is based on one of Pirandello’s one-act plays, which Waterhouse first produced in 1999 and remade in May 2007 for performance in Elim, Capetown and the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

An enormous jug is mounted on the back of a small van. It contains a medicine against all possible diseases and disasters of our time. At least that is what the man says who drives the van. He hopes that it will keep all young people on the right track, even if they have a criminal background. But then the jug breaks. The man tries to glue it back together with the help of a cleaning woman…

After the performance, Roel Twijnstra will address the specific circumstances under which the play was reconstructed and performed in South Africa.

Ivo Vander Borght is muzikant, scenograaf en zakelijk leider van de sociaal-artistieke theatergroep Sering uit het Antwerpse Borgerhout (bekend van succesvolle optredens tijdens de wijktheaterfestivals in 2001, 2003 en 2005). In 1999 startte Ivo bij Sering het Recyclage-orkest. De jongeren van dit orkest maken hun instrumenten van allerlei afval: olievaten, koperen buizen, potten en pannen, conservenblikken, loodgietersbuizen, metaal in al zijn vormen, fietswielen, kartonnen dozen, enz. Het zal duidelijk zijn dat deze wijze van musiceren een buitengewoon laagdrempelige toegang mogelijk maakt voor niet muzikaal geschoolden.

Deelnemers aan de workshop kunnen om het even welk recyclagemateriaal meebrengen dat een enigszins leuk en eigenzinnig geluid voortbrengt. De inventiviteit van de deelnemers is bepalend voor het resultaat van de workshop.

Ivo van der Borght is musician, set designer and business manager of community-based theatre company Sering in Antwerp, Belgium, which also performed in the 2001, 2003 and 2005 edition of our festival. In 1999, Ivo founded the recycling orchestra. Young people involved in this orchestra construct musical instruments from garbage: oil drums, copper tubes, pots, pans, tin cans, lead pipes, metal pieces, bicycle wheels, cardboard boxes, etc. It is obvious that this kind of music making is easily accessible to people who are not musically trained.

Participants in this workshop can bring whatever piece of garbage they can find, provided it makes some kind of original sound. The inventiveness of participants determines the result of this workshop.

De workshop ‘Music and Motion’ wordt gegeven door Rosalba Rolon, artistiek directeur van de New Yorkse Latino theatergroep Pregones uit de Bronx. Pregones is bekend van voorgaande festivals met de stukken ‘El Apagon/The Blackout’ (festival 2003) en ‘Peccatoribus’ (festival 2005).
De workshop biedt een introductie op de methode om theatraal materiaal te halen uit alledaagse gebeurtenissen en verhalen. De deelnemers zullen worden uitgenodigd om zich door van alles te laten inspireren. Van dingen die gevonden worden in persoonlijke tasjes tot gebeurtenissen die eerder die dag plaatsvonden. Hun verbeelding zal worden gestimuleerd door tekst, beweging en emotie. This workshop will be facilitated by Rosalba Rolón, artistic director of the Bronx-based latino theatre company Pregones, which in 2003 And 2005 performed at earlier editions of this festival.
In this workshop she will offer an introduction to the method Pregones uses to distill theatrical material from everyday events and stories. The participants will be asked to seek inspiration in anything, varying from found objects, things in their pockets or purses, to events that happened to them before. Their imagination will be triggered by text, movement and emotion. By making connections between these areas, a new way of creating dramatic material will evolve.

Acta Community Theatre uit Bristol Engeland maakt al jaren theatervoorstellingen met veel verschillende groepen uit Bristol. Acta stelt mensen in staat om hun eigen stukken te ontwikkelen. Stukken die gaan over het leven in hun wijk. Hoewel gewerkt wordt met onervaren buurtbewoners stelt Acta hoge kwaliteitseisen aan het spelniveau. In deze workshop deelt artistiek leider Neil Beddow zijn ervaringen met de deelnemers en gaat in op de specifieke wijze waarop hij de hoogst mogelijke kwaliteit bereikt met onervaren spelers.

ACTA community theatre from Bristol, England has been making community-based theatre shows with different groups of people for many years. ACTA allows people to develop and produce their opwn shows, which usually deal with life at the neighbourhood level. Even though ACTA works with untrained actors, ACTA thrives for high production values.
In this workshop artistic director Neil Beddow shares his experiences of working with diverse groups of residents in Bristol and addresses specifically how he works to reach the highest possible quality with inexperienced actors.

‘Undercover’ van het Rotterdams Wijktheater vertelt de op waarheid beruste verhalen van Rotterdamse jongeren. Trobbies, problemen, komen naar boven terwijl je ze liever verborgen of undercover houdt. Problemen die je verstikken, waar je je voor schaamt, die te pijnlijk zijn. Shiva bijvoorbeeld doet alsof ze geen problemen heeft. Voor haar is het leven één grote grap. Helaas zijn we er getuige van hoe haar problemen zich opstapelen. Zwanger, weggelopen van huis, een vriend die ook geen inkomen heeft en dan opeens… de verleiding.

In ‘Undercover’ worden confronterende verhaallijnen gedanst, gezongen en gespeeld door de hoofdrolspelers zelf.
Over het maakproces van Undercover is een buitengewoon indringende en inzichtelijke film gemaakt. Goed is te zien hoe weerbarstig het werkveld is en hoe het tot stand komen van zo’n theaterproduct (een samenwerkingsproject van het Rotterdams Wijktheater met Riag Rotterdam Rijnmond) zich voltrekt. De weerstanden die moeten worden overwonnen, maar ook de euforie en het enthousiasme na het succesvol bestrijden van de zoveelste crisis. In deze workshop kunt u kennis nemen van deze bijzondere film in aanwezigheid van de maker en regisseur Hans Lein, die nadere toelichting zal geven op het vertoonde en vragen zal beantwoorden.

‘Undercover’ was a 2007 production of Rotterdams Wijktheater. It is based on true stories of Rotterdam youth; about problems you prefer to cover up, problems that suffocate you, that embarrass you, that hurt you. Shiva, for example, acts carefree. Life is one big joke to her, or so it seems. In fact, she has to deal with one problem after another: pregnancy, running away from home, a boyfriend without a job, and then suddenly … seduction. In Undercover confronting stories are being danced, sung, and acted out by those who have lived through them.

Theatre director Hans Lein made a documentary about the making process of ‘Undercover’. It clearly shows how challenging it is to work on this kind of project in collaboration with communal health service organization RIAG. There is a lot of resistance, but also enthusiasm and satisfaction when obstacles are overcome. In this workshop, this film will be screened and Hans Lein himself will be present to answer questions and demonstrate techniques.

Ivan Iparraguirre, van oorsprong Peruaan die in Lima zijn acteer- en regieopleiding genoot, richtte in 1994 Teatro Pasmi op in Santiago, Chili.
In deze workshop zal hij vooral ingaan op hoe Pasmi als avant garde performance groep op buurtniveau werkt met gemarginaliseerde bevolkingsgroepen. Hij zal ook aandacht besteden aan Pasmi’s werk in Chileense gevangenissen, waar het de afgelopen zeven jaar onafgebroken is bezig geweest, o.a. met radiohoorspelen voor en door gedetineerden. Dit werk is gebaseerd op het filosofische gedachtengoed van constructivistisch denken (actief leren, intuitief denken).

Ivan Iparraguirre, a native Peruvian who received his acting and directing degree in Lima, founded Teatro Pasmi in 1994 in Santiago, Chile. In this workshop he will discuss how Pasmi works as a performance group at the community level in marginalized communities, and will also give an insight into the company’s uninterrupted community theatre work with detainees in Chilean prisons during the last seven years, work that is based on the philosophical framework of constructivist theory (active learning, intuitive thinking).

Door PETA (Filipijnen)
The Philippines Educational Theater Association (PETA) werd in 1967 opgericht en heeft zich de afgelopen 40 jaar dwars door turbulente politieke tijden heen, ontwikkeld tot een van de meest vooraanstaande geëngageerde theaterorganisaties in Zuidoost Azië. Het is een van de belangrijkste makers van nieuw repertoire in de Filippijnen en met haar School voor People’s Theatre een cruciaal steunpunt voor community theatre. Vanuit deze afdeling hebben professionele kunstenaars een jongerengroep uit de provinciestad Infanta geholpen bij het maken van een multidiscplinaire voorstelling over de modderlawine die in 2004 deze plek verwoestte. Deze voorstelling, die in Infanta en omstreken veel emoties losmaakte, wordt speciaal voor het ICAF gereconstrueerd met 3 PETA artiesten, waaronder de bekende folkzanger Noël Cabangon en drie van de oorspronkelijke speelsters uit ‘Infanta’, Po, Joan en Dianne.

Gelardeerd met muziek en dans, traceert het stuk de levens van drie vriendinnen, waarvan er één naar Manilla gaat om te studeren – en daar in de afgrond beland - en de andere twee na de middelbare school in Infanta blijven. In hun onstuimige levens verschijnt plots de allesvernietigende storm. Een van de meiden overleeft omdat ze in een van de hoogste gebouwen van Infanta woont. De ander redt zich door in een boom te klimmen. De derde, die in Manilla verblijft, probeert zo gauw mogelijk naar Infanta te komen en beland daar in een macabere dans van mensen die met brandende kaarsen op zoek zijn naar hun familieleden. In de consternatie komen de drie vriendinnen elkaar toevallig tegen. Ze komen er zo gedrieën achter dat de storm en de lawine hun naast alle ellende ook het besef hebben bijgebracht hoeveel ze om hun families, elkaar en de gemeenschap van Infanta geven. Ze eindigen met een poëtische liefdesverklaring aan de stad: ‘Oyayi ng Mundo’ (wiegelied voor de wereld).

The Philippines Educational Theater Association (PETA) was founded in 1967 and over the past forty turbulent years has developed into one of the most influential progressive theatre organizations in South-east Asia. PETA is an important producer of new theatre repertoire in the Philippines but also a crucial motor behind community theatre, particularly through the courses and follow-up support it provides to partners in the Metro Manila region and elsewhere in the country. Thus, PETA’s school for People’s Theatre assisted young people from the provincial town of Infanta in creating a performance on the effects of a devastating mudslide in 2004. Especially for ICAF 2008, three young women together with three professional performers from PETA have reconstructed ‘Infanta’.

Mixed with live music and dance, the performance traces the lives of three friends, only one of whom moves to Manila to study after graduating from high school. She falls for the temptations of the big city. Suddenly the destructive typhoon enters their already tempestuous lives. One of the girls survives because she and her family happen to live in one of the tallest buildings in Infanta. Another saves herself by climbing into a tree. The thrid one hurries back to her home town from Manila and finds herself in the middle of a macabre dance with burning candles that people use in their search for loved ones. The three girls run into each other on the street and discover in the process that despite all the destruction the mudslide has also taught them how much they care for each other, their families, and Infanta. They end with a poetic ode to their town: ‘Oyayi ng Mundo’ (lullaby for the world).website

Naoorlogse woontorens domineren de Bristolse achterstandswijken. In ‘The No-ones’ proberen zes vrouwen te ontsnappen aan hun mistroostige leven in “the housing estates”. De zes doen mee aan een talentenjacht die hen roem en fortuin moet brengen. Maar ten koste van wat gaan zij hun droom waar maken?

The No-ones is tegelijk hilarisch en ontroerend met tal van bekende liederen uit de zestiger en zeventiger jaren. Het ‘I’m in the mood for dancing’ zal de zaal zeker niet onberoerd laten!
Onder bezielende leiding van de regisseurs Ingrid Jones en Neil Beddow heeft Acta The No-ones samen met de spelers ontwikkeld. Het stuk is een vervolg op het buitengewoon succesvolle ‘For love nor Money’, dat te zien was op het Internationaal Community Theatre Festival van 2005.

Post-war highrise flats dominate the skyline of Bristol’s poorer neighbourhoods. In ‘The No Ones’ six women try to escape from their dreary lives in these public housing estates. They join a talent contest hoping that it will bring them fame and fortune. But what is the price they really pay to make their dreams come true?
The No Ones is both hilarious and moving and contains many popular songs from the sixties and seventies. Their fabulous rendering of ‘I’m in the mood for dancing’ is sure to move the audience.

Directed by Ingrid Jones and Neil Beddow, ACTA (Avon Community Theatre Association) has created ‘The No Ones’ together with the participants. It is a sequel to the hugely popular ‘For Love Nor Money’, which ACTA also presented at our previous festival in 2005.

Voor het eerst in haar bestaan heeft het Rotterdams Wijktheater een dansvoorstelling gemaakt: NADIA. Deze productie is tot stand gekomen in samenwerking met SCALA, expertisecentrum voor emancipatie en participatie en met het Albeda Dans College. Choreografe/regisseuse van ‘Nadia’ is Jeanine Coco, die al vele jaren met jongeren danstheatervoorstellingen maakt. Ze wordt geassisteerd door Carole van Dizhuysen, derdejaars student aan de Amsterdamse Toneelschool. Samen maakten ze eerder voorstellingen voor Stichting de Vrolijkheid en theatergroep Dox.

NADIA gaat over hoe het voor meisjes is om op te groeien in twee culturen en is gebaseerd op interviews met Rotterdamse meiden en vrouwen.

For the first time in its history, Rotterdams Wijktheater has created a dance performance, Nadia. This is, in fact, a co-production with SCALA, an organisatio for emancipation and participation, and the Albeda Dance College. It has been choreographed and directed by Jeanine Coco, who has many years of experience creating dance performances with young people. She has been assisted by Carole van Dizhuysen, third year student at the Amsterdam Theatre School. Together they have made earlier productions with youth theatre company Dox and for the Foundation to Promote Happiness, an arts organization working in Dutch refugee camps.

Door studenten LIPA (GB)

2e jaarstudenten van de Community Drama opleiding van het Liverpool Institute for Perorming Arts (LIPA) presenteren participatieve community theaterprojecten met mensen uit de achterban van FC Liverpool.
Voetbal heeft een prominente plek in de cultuur van Liverpoolse ‘working class’ wijken. Er zijn verschillende aspecten rond voetbal, sommige zijn positief, sommige negatief. Maar allemaal zijn ze terug te vinden in het dagelijks leven van de buurtbewoners. ‘Heart and Sole’ is de verzameltitel van een aantal projecten die allemaal gaan over onderwerpen rond voetbal.

‘Heart and Sole’ wordt uitgevoerd door de ‘The Mixed Collective’, een gelegenheidsnaam waarmee de LIPA-studenten die aan dit project hebben meegedaan zich hebben getooid. Analoog aan de werkwijze van Codarts en het Rotterdams Wijktheater (zij bezochten vorig jaar het RWT) met het Hand in Hand project, hebben zij intensief gewerkt met verschillende groepen uit de wijken van Liverpool om erachter te komen wat voetbal voor hen betekent. Middels een theatrale presentatie doen de studenten verslag van hun buitengewoon interessante ervaringen. Aan de voorstelling wordt meegedaan door alle studenten, die aan dit project hebben gewerkt en speciaal voor het Internationaal Community Arts Festival uit Liverpool overkomen.

Football is a prominent part of Liverpool culture. There are many aspects surrounding the game, some celebratory, some less positive, all of which contribute to this culture as well as modern day society. ‘Heart and Sole’, which is the working title for this public performance project, aims to explore and recognize the issues brought about by football.

‘Heart and Sole‘ is a project being conducted ‘The Mixed Collective’, a young and fresh Community Arts Theatre Company of LIPA (Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts). Their aim is to work with different sectors of the community gaining a variety of opinions and providing an insight on how Liverpool people are affected by Football.

Samen met schrijver en hiphopdichter Aaron Jafferisen, regisseur Dexter Singleton en enkele spelers demonstreert hij vervolgens hun manier van werken bij het tot stand komen van ‘Kingdom’, de voorstelling die ze zaterdag te zien is.

In deze workshop laten drie makers zien hoe zij op uiteenlopende wijze een relatie hebben gelegd tussen het medium film en de levenservaringen van mensen uit de wijk. ‘De Portretestafette’ bevat videoportretten van vier moeders uit de Utrechtse wijk Zuilen. De vrouwen zijn begeleid door documentairemaakster Sanne Sprenger.
‘Torie’ is een film die Sarhan Hacene heeft gemaakt met vijfendertig jongeren van allerlei nationaliteiten uit de Rotterdamse Afrikaanderwijk.
‘Stephanie Moukouri’ tenslotte is een filmportret dat Kaat Zoontjens heeft gemaakt over de wederwaardigheden van een meisje uit Kameroen dat hier in Nederland een studie volgt. De makers zullen tijdens de workshop verslag doen van hun ervaringen tijdens het maakproces.

In this workshop three makers will demonstrate how they have – each in their own way - made a connection between the art form film and the real-life experiences of neighbourhood residents. ‘The Portrait Relay’ contains video portraits of four mothers in the Utrecht neighbourhood of Zuilen. The women, who did the camera work themselves, were coached by documentary maker Sanne Sprenger.
‘Torie’ is a film that Sarhan Hacene made together with 35 youngsters from a variety of cultural backgrounds in the Rotterdam neighbourhood of Afrikaanderwijk.
‘Stephanie Moukouri’ is a film portrait that Kaat Zoontjens made about a young Camerounese woman studying in Rotterdam. During the workshops, the makers will be present to comment on their different ways of working.

Ter gelegenheid van het honderdjarig bestaan van Feyenoord maakt het Rotterdams Wijktheater samen met Codarts Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (Conservatorium en Dansacademie), het ICAF Festival en Theater Zuidplein een voorstelling over het wel en wee van deze voetbalclub. De multimediavoorstelling ‘Hand in Hand’ gaat over de roemrijke geschiedenis van deze legendarische club en haar trouwe supportersaanhang. ‘Hand in Hand’ belooft een wervelende show te worden vol muziek, dans en theater, gespeeld door supporters, jongeren en buurtbewoners.

Rotterdams Wijktheater, Codarts College for Music and Dance and Theater Zuidplein

On the occasion of the one hundredst anniversary of Feyenoord, the Rotterdam Wijktheater - in collaboration with artistic staff members and students of Codarts College for Music and Dance - has created a multimedia performance about the ups and downs of this legendary soccer club. The show, named ‘Hand in Hand’ (after the signature club song with the same title) deals with the memorable history of the club and its faithful fans, intersecting it with landmark events in society and culture of the city of Rotterdam. It features supporters, neighbourhood residents and Rotterdam youth as performers on stage.

Directed by professional theatre makers, musicians and circus artists, ‘Hand in Hand’ is the festive opening event of this fourth international festival of community arts.

PST (Zuid Afrika)
De groep PST (Problem Solving Theatre) heeft haar basis in Durban, Zuid Afrika. De groepsleden werken als sinds 1998 samen, maar officieel werd de PST in 2005 opgericht. De groep is gespecialiseerd in community theatre met een sociale strekking. Zie voor meer informatie de beschrijving van de stukken die PST vrijdag 28 maart opvoert.

In hun workshop gaan de PST spelers in op de specifieke omstandigheden waaronder zij in Zuid Afrika moeten werken. Zij maken onder meer gebruik van de ook bij ons bekende technieken van het ‘Theatre of the Oppressed’ (Boal). Stem, lichaam en verbeelding worden ingezet om verhalen om te zetten in creatieve ervaringen. Tijdens de workshop worden de deelnemers uitgenodigd om mee te gaan in een creatief proces met producten van hun eigen verbeeldingskracht als resultaat.

PST (Zuid Afrika)
Problem Solving Theatre has its basis in Durban, South Africa. The members have been together since 1998, but the group did not get officially established until 2005. They specialize in community theatre with social themes.

In their workshop, the performers will explain the circumstances under which they work in South Africa. They make use of techniques derived from Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed. Voice, body and imagination are activated to turn personal experiences into creative acts. During this workshop participants are invited to go along with a creative process that will lead them to performative act that are the fruit of their own imagination.

Petra Kuppers (Germany/US)
Petra Kuppers een choreografe en theaterwetenschapper, gespecialiseerd in community art and bewegingskunst met gehandicapten. Ze heeft o.a. in Duitsland, Groot Brittannië en Nieuw-Zeeland spraakmakende producties gemaakt. Haar huidige basis is de University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, waar ze Associate Professor is. Naast haar artistieke werk is ze ook auteur van twee recente Routledge publicaties, Community Performance: An Introduction en The Community Performance Reader.

In haar workshop gaat Petra Kuppers in woord en daad in op allerlei fysieke en conceptuele aspecten van community dans/performance. Deze kunstvormen zijn in principe toegankelijk voor ongetrainde dansers en performers, ook die met lichamelijke en verstandelijke beperkingen. In dit alles is het bewegende lichaam uitgangspunt van deze bijzondere vorm van community art, die de deelnemer aan den lijve kan ondergaan.

Petra Kuppers (Germany/US)
Petra Kuppers is a choreographer and performance scholar, specializing in community art and movement art with variably abled participants. She has made remarkable productions in Germany, Great Britain, the US, and New Zealand. Her current base is at the University of Michigan, where she is Associate Professor. In addition to her artistic work she is author of several books, including the recently published Community Performance: An Introduction and The Community Performance Reader (Routledge).

In her workshop, Petra will explore – hands-on – the physical and conceptual limits of comunity dance / performance. These art forms should, in principle, be accessible to untrained participants, including those with mental or physical challenges. In all of this, the moving body is the starting point for a very special form of community art, which the participants of this workshop will be able to experience first-hand.

4 Collectieve Creatie en Community Film (Belgium)
“Kunstenaars gaan in steden vaak gelegenheidsallianties aan. Ze nestelen zich op stedelijke breuklijnen en gebruiken de straat als werkdomein. Deze projecten ontstaan uit noodzaak - om problemen aan te kaarten - uit nieuwsgierigheid of uit het verlangen om te communiceren. De ‘Ander’ wordt dan niet enkel gebruikt als inspiratiebron, maar ook als medeontwerper. Diversiteit betekent betrokkenheid. Zo wordt er participatorisch gewerkt en ontstaan collectieven die gedurende een bepaalde tijd samen een project op touw zetten”. Jongerentheater Cactus uit Münster richt zich sinds haar oprichting in 1992 op het bereiken van jongeren met verschillende culturele achtergronden. ‘Undercover’ van het Rotterdams Wijktheater vertelt de op waarheid beruste verhalen van Rotterdamse jongeren.

These projects are born because there is a need for them, to address problems, out of curiosity or the desire to communicate. The ‘other’ is not only used as a source of inspiration, but as co-designer. Diversity means involvement. In this way we work in a participatory way and create ad hoc collectives that journey together for a particular period of time”. Iedere ochtend komt een groep theaterwetenschapstudenten bij elkaar om de voorstellingen en workshops van de vorige dag te bespreken. In die discussie - onder leiding van kunstcritici Sonia van der Valk, Raymond Frenken en Manon Berendse en theaterwetenschapper Wil Hildebrand – zal de complexe vraag over kwaliteit van community art centraal staan. Deze groep, die in feite ook een ad hoc redactie voor het festivalverslag vormt, zal alle festivalonderdelen verslaan en inhoudelijke amunitie vergaren voor het slotdebat op zondag 30 maart.

Every morning a group of theatre studies students from Utrecht University get together to discuss the events and performances of the previous day. In that discussion, led by critics Sonia van der Valk, Raymond Frenken, Manon Berendse and Wil Hildebrand, the complex question of how to assess quality in community arts will be central. This group, which in effect will be the editorial board of the eventual festival report, will report on (and review) all festival components and gather ‘ammunition’ for the final debate of Sunday, March 30.

Van 26 tot en met 30 maart 2008 vindt het 4e International Community Arts Festival plaats in en om Theater Zuidplein te Rotterdam. Het festival zal naast theater ook andere kunstdisciplines bevatten als dans, muziek, nieuwe media, en beeldende kunst.

Iedere dag beginnen we met een talkshow in de ochtend, waarin spelers en makers aan het woord komen.
Na de lunch heeft u een keuze uit zes workshops tussen 13.00u en 14.30u, waarna er tussen 15.00u en 17.00u een menu van voorstellingen en presentaties wordt aangeboden. Na het avondeten is er iedere avond om 19.30u een vroege voorstelling in de kleine zaal van het Zuidplein en een late voorstelling in de grote zaal om 21u. Iedere dag sluiten we spetterend af met live muziek in het café: het zogenaamde late night podium.

From 26 through 30 March 2008 the fourth edition of the International Community Arts Festival will take place in and around the Zuidplein Theatre in Rotterdam. In addition to theatre, the expanded festival will now also include other art disciplines like dance, music, visual arts and new media.Each day we begin with a talk show featuring actors and makers. After lunch, we offer a first round of workshops between 1 and 2.30 PM and a first round of showcases and presentations between 3 and 5 PM. After dinner, an early evening performance will commence at 7.30 PM in the small auditorium of Zuidplein Theatre. It will be followed by another performance in the main auditorium at 9 PM. The evening will conclude with live music in a festive event in the theatre café we call ‘late night open stage’.

Hoe zou je Kwaliteit communiceren?

De beeldend kunstenaars Tonny van Sommeren (NL), Alan May (GB) en Kamiel Verschuren (NL) zullen een toelichting geven op hun werk in relatie tot Gemeenschaps Kunst. Daarna zullen zij je meenemen in een workshop naar de verbeelding van Kwaliteit, dat vanaf dat moment deel zal gaan uitmaken van het festival.
